Archaeological findings indicate that humans began to use naturally occurring volcanic glass in the Stone Age. Roman historians found that synthetic glass had appeared in 3500 BC. Much surprising scientific discovery came about when someone found something they weren’t looking for. When mixed with the sea sand at high temperature, the saltpeter, originally only intended to be used as a booster, will react to form a translucent crystal that is the earliest man-made glass.
Around 200 BC, the Babylonians developed the technique of glass blowing for making glass. After continuous evolution, the Romans made the first cameo glass in the first century, as exemplified by the famous Portland Vase. During the 14th century, Venetian craftsmen perfected sheet glass making, a technique invented in Germany in the 11th century, which enabled Venice to become Europe’s major glassmaking center. Among the glass products made by Venice, tableware is well-known. Until now, there are still many glassmaking talents in Europe who have got influenced by Venice.
If you want to know more about glass craftsmanship, the Corning Museum of Glass founded in New York by Corning Glass Works is now home to the world’s largest collection of glass, containing over 50,000 objects representing 3,500 years of glass history.
Although Taiwan is a small island, it′s glass culture has been developed for a long time. And there is a Taiwan Glass Gallery in Changhua with the motto of ” Bright beauty on all sides, wonder in all directions”, combined with Taiwan’s ecological, cultural, and artistic characteristics to breathe new life into the glass.
